DDNS Keys: No-IP’s Latest Star Feature

It has been a few months since we released our DDNS Keys feature, and we’ve been getting rave reviews from customers who have been exploring and utilizing them.

What is a DDNS Key?

A DDNS Key is a set of credentials specific to a hostname or multiple hostnames. A DDNS Key can configure Dynamic DNS without using your account login credentials.

Most importantly, they offer improved security by having unique credentials for each device, which are disassociated from your No-IP account login. Furthermore, when using DDNS Keys for all hostnames you can change your account credentials without reconfiguring update clients.

Not only that, but they offer better update client compatibility, especially with updates targeting multiple hostnames. You can learn more about keeping your update client active here.

Thankfully, there are many devices and manufacturers that work with DDNS Keys. In fact, all of our existing integrations with devices and manufacturers work with DDNS Keys.

Groups vs. DDNS Keys

These features may sound familiar to our Enhanced, Plus Managed, or pro Dynamic DNS customers who already have used our Groups feature. Groups was a feature that would come in handy when installing an update client at multiple locations and are not the sole user of those computers/devices.

DDNS Keys have all the functionality of a Group but are easier to configure, more secure, and offer better update client compatibility. Compared to Groups, DDNS Keys allow you to work independently and are subject to less troubleshooting.

With DDNS Keys configured in your update client ,you can manage which hostnames receive update in the No-IP portal, never having to go back to the location to change the hostname. DDNS Keys are a robust and more intuitive replacement for the Groups feature.

Therefore, we recommend users use DDNS Keys moving forward and only use the Groups guide if they have already created Groups in the past that they need to manage. As a result, any new Group will need to use DDNS Keys and thus will no longer be able to use Group passwords.
